The long-awaited moment has finally arrived—Ladakh is now connected year-round, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to witness this transformation firsthand. The inauguration of the Z-Morh Tunnel marks a significant milestone in the history of Jammu and Kashmir’s infrastructure. Having travelled along the treacherous roads of Sonamarg before, I understand the frustration of seasonal closures and the risks that travellersface due to avalanches and heavy snowfall. But now, with this engineering marvel in place, things are bound to change for the better.
A Lifeline for Connectivity
For years, Ladakh’s winter isolation posed a major challenge, not just for civilians but also for defence forces stationed in the region. The Z-Morh Tunnel, spanning 6.5 km at an altitude of 8,652 feet, eliminates this problem. Situated between Gagangir and Sonamarg, this two-lane tunnel bypasses the avalanche-prone Z-shaped road, reducing travel time from over two hours to just 15 minutes.I recall a journey I took a few years ago when the road was blocked due to sudden snowfall. Stranded along with many other travellers, we had no option but to wait for hours until the road was cleared. That sense of helplessness will now be a thing of the past, thanks to the tunnel that ensures uninterrupted travel throughout the year.
Boosting Tourism and the Local Economy
Sonamarg has always been a paradise for travellers, but its potential was largely untapped due to its inaccessibility in winter. The Z-Morh Tunnel changes this by opening doors for winter tourism. With reliable road access, adventure seekers can now visit Sonamarg for snow sports, trekking, and winter festivals, making it a year-round tourist destination.For local businesses, this means a steady stream of visitors even in the harshest months. As someone who has seen small businesses struggle during off-seasons, I find it heartening that this tunnel will provide economic stability to local hotels, restaurants, and transport operators. Artisans and shopkeepers will also benefit from increased footfall, giving a much-needed boost to the region’s economy.
Strategic Importance for National Security

The region’s proximity to the Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan and the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China makes seamless connectivity a necessity. Strengthening our road network in such sensitive regions enhances India’s defence preparedness, ensuring that our troops have uninterrupted access to the frontlines.

One of the most exciting aspects of this development is its potential to create jobs and promote economic growth. Improved connectivity means that Ladakh’s farmers can transport their produce to markets without fear of spoilage. Local businesses will thrive, and employment opportunities will expand across tourism, transportation, and retail sectors.As a Kashmiri, I have often seen young people struggle with limited job prospects, forcing many to migrate to other states for employment. This project, along with upcoming infrastructure developments, has the potential to reverse this trend by bringing investment and opportunities to the region.
Addressing Environmental Concerns
While development is crucial, it must go hand in hand with sustainability. Constructing a tunnel in an ecologically fragile region like the Himalayas raises concerns about habitat disruption and environmental degradation. However, reducing vehicle congestion over the Zojila Pass will also minimize road erosion and carbon emissions from idling vehicles stuck in traffic.To balance progress with sustainability, authorities must implement reforestation initiatives, regulate waste management, and ensure responsible tourism. Visitors, too, have a role to play in preserving the natural beauty of the region by following eco-friendly practices.
